Adelaide Rams History

The Adelaide Rams was an Australian professional rugby league football club bases in Adelaide, South Australia. The team was formed in 1995 for the planned Super League competition in 1997 and the second in the first season of the National Rugby League (NRL) in 1998.  The Rams were not a successful in winning only 13 out the 42 games. However, crowd numbers in the first season were the fifth highest of any first-grade club that year but dwindled to sixteenth in the second season. The Adelaide club was shut down at the end of the 1998 season as a result of poor on field performances, dwindling crowd numbers, financial losses and a reduction in the number of teams in the NRL. They remain from the state of South Australia to have participated in top-level rugby league in Australia

RISE & FALL OF THE ADELAIDE RAMS

Will the State of Origin Adelaide game revive interest in NRL?

South Australian fans hope the recent State of Origin clash will help build a case to bring back the #AdelaideRams in a state that’s traditionally been an AFL stronghold.

The inclusion of a South Australian based team in the National Rugby League (NRL) as part of this competition’s future expansion agenda. It positions South Australia as a high-value, emerging market. It can deliver strong economic, social, and participation outcomes. Those outcomes align with government priorities.

South Australia has a proven track record of hosting elite sporting events at venues such as Adelaide Oval. This attracts interstate visitation and national broadcast audiences, as well as local engagement. Building on this foundation, a permanent NRL team could be established. It would shift the focus from event-based economic impact to year-round benefits.

From a government viewpoint, the initiative aligns with key policy objectives. It supports economic growth, creates jobs, boosts tourism, and enhances community well-being. A South Australian NRL team would stimulate direct and indirect employment across event operations, hospitality, media, and high-performance sport, while increasing national exposure for the state through regular broadcast coverage.

The long-term social outcomes by strengthening grassroots participation pathways, particularly among youth, multicultural communities, and regional populations. Investment in rugby league development programs would complement existing sporting infrastructure and contribute to broader health and social inclusion strategy of the Australian Rugby League Commission, which has identified the need to broaden the game’s geographic footprint beyond traditional markets. South Australia represents a strategically underrepresented region with the infrastructure, corporate base, and government partnership capability required to support a successful franchise.

Overall

The strongest case for an Adelaide NRL team is not simply that the city “deserves” one. Rather it is that the right club, under the right ownership and with the right strategy, could deliver benefits to multiple stakeholders.

  • For South Australia: economic activity, jobs, tourism, youth pathways and another elite sporting asset.
  • For the NRL: a stronger national competition, a new commercial market and long-term growth opportunities.
  • For the community: greater sporting choice, local identity and increased participation in rugby league.

Estimated Market Growth

If the Adelaide Rams were to return to the NRL (whether under the Rams name or a new Adelaide franchise), the biggest opportunity would not simply be adding another club – it would be growing the NRL into genuine national competition. The market growth potential extends across attendance, participation, media, sponsorship, tourism and grassroots development.

  1. New supporter market

Adelaide has a metropolitan population of approximately 1.4 million people, making it Australia’s fifth-largest city. Even if only 5-10% of the population became active supporters, that would create:

  • 70,000-14,000 engaged supporters
  • 15,000-25,000 average home crowds established
  • 20,000+ crowds got marquee matches and finals

The original Adelaide Rams averaged more than 15,000 spectators in the inaugural 1997 season before the Super League peace deal led to their removal. This suggests there is historical evidence of support when the club is well marketed.

2. Television audience growth

South Australia currently has no NRL club.

An Adelaide team would:

  • create a weekly local television audience
  • increase subscription and streaming interest
  • improve national broadcast value
  • provide another prime-time market

The National Rugby League (NRL) has experienced rapid growth, reaching more than 224 million cumulative TV viewers across Australia and New Zealand in 2025, demonstrating there is still room for expansion into new markets.

3. Participation growth

The biggest long-term opportunity is grassroots participation.

The NRL already has more than 1.12 million participants across Australia and the Pacific, with strong growth driven by schools and junior programs. An Adelaide club would likely accelerate local participation by creating visible pathways from school to elite competition.

POTENTIAL 10-YEAR OUTCOMES IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA COULD INCLUDE:

AREACURRENTWITH NRL CLUB
Junior Registrations ModerateSignificant Growth
Female Participation GrowingStrong Acceleration
School Competitions LimitedStatewide Expansion
Regional PathwaysLimited Professional Pathway
Looking ahead to 10 years' time what the potential outcomes could look like.

4. Corporate sponsorship

South Australia has a diverse corporate base including:

  • defence industries
  • mining
  • renewable energy
  • wine
  • technology
  • health
  • education

An Adelaide club would provide local companies with a national sporting platform that currently does not exist in the NRL.

5. Tourism and visitor economy

Nine or ten home games every year would attract interstate supporters.

Benefits include:

  • hotel bookings
  • restaurants
  • transport
  • entertainment
  • major event activation

South Australia has demonstrated the economic impact of major sporting events through initiatives like Gather Round, which has generated hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity.

6. National footprint

Strategically, Adelaide fills one of the largest remaining gaps in the NRL map.

The League would have clubs in:

  • Queensland
  • New South Wales
  • ACT
  • Victoria
  • South Australia (no team or planned at the moment)
  • Western Australia (with Perth entering)
  • Papua New Guinea (planned)

This Strengthens the NRL’s claim as a truly national competition.

Potential economic impact

Based on comparisons with other expansion clubs and major sporting events, an Adelaide NRL club could reasonably aspire to:

  • $60-$100 million annual economic activity after establishment
  • 200-500 direct and indirect jobs
  • 15,000-25,000 average attendance
  • 100,000+ annual spectators
  • significant increases in junior participation over 10 years

These figures indicative projections rather than guarantees and would depend on stadium arrangements, team performance, marketing, and government and corporate support.

Challenges

Growth would not be automatic. The club would need to overcome:

  • competition with AFL in South Australia
  • building awareness among casual sports fans
  • securing a strong ownership model
  • developing junior pathways
  • maintaining competitive on-field performance

Overall assessment

An Adelaide franchise represents one of the NRL’s strongest remaining expansion opportunities because it would create new demand, rather dividing an existing rugby league market. The largest gains would likely come from:

  1. Expanding into a new metropolitan market 1.4 million people.
  2. Growing participation through schools and junior pathways.
  3. Increasing broadcast value with a dedicated South Australian audience.
  4. Attracting new sponsors and major-event tourism.
  5. Strengthening the NRL’s position as a genuinely national competition.
